The Fault in Our Stars lead actors Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort were the big winners at Sunday night’s Teen Choice awards, taking six prizes between them in the film categories.

Woodley won best action movie actress for dystopian sci-fi piece Divergent, and best drama actress for The Fault in Our Stars, the indie romance tearjerker which proved a surprise box office hit earlier this year. She also shared best movie chemistry and the all important best movie liplock with Elgort, who won best movie breakout star and best drama actor for his work in The Fault in Our Stars and Divergent.

Based on John Green’s bestselling young adult novel of the same name, The Fault in Our Stars features Woodley and Elgort as lovers Hazel and Gus; she a cancer patient who must wheel around a portable oxygen tank, he a young man whose bone cancer has led to the amputation of a leg. Elgort told the audience: “I really am glad that we were embraced by young people who were dealing with the illness and I just hope that we did it justice and my heart goes to everyone who’s dealing with it, because cancer sucks.”

The Fault in Our Stars also won best drama, and supporting actor Nat Wolff took home best movie scene stealer. Divergent picked up two further awards, best action movie and best action movie actor for Theo James.

Elsewhere there were wins for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which took best science fiction fantasy movie, best villain (Donald Sutherland), best sci-fi movie and best sci-fi movie actress (Jennifer Lawrence). 22 Jump Street also did well, taking best summer movie, best summer movie star (Channing Tatum) and best movie hissy fit for Jonah Hill.

Teen Choice Awards organisers say 165m votes were cast online to honour the stars of film, television, music, comedy, sports, fashion and the digital arena. However, this year’s ceremony has been hit with controversy after a number of victors past and present claimed voters have no say in the final prize-winners.
