The Inbetweeners 2 has scored the biggest opening weekend of the year at the UK box office with a haul of £12.5m in its first five days. This means the sequel is well on the way to equalling the £45m taken by the debut instalment of the series three years ago. The Inbetweeners 2 made £2.75m on its opening day, 6 August, a record for a live-action comedy at the UK box office.

The new film sees former schoolfriends Will, Simon and Neil heading to meet Jay, who is on his gap year in Australia. Cast members Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison have all returned for the sequel.

Inbetweeners co-creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris told Metro newspaper in London on Tuesday that there would be no third instalment in the series, which transferred to the big screen from an original three-season run on UK television stations Channel 4 and E4. However, cast members have shown greater willingness to return. Answering Guardian readers' questions last week, Thomas said: "We do feel quite at home in this show. When we get back together, there's quite a lot of infant regression going on. So maybe we haven't outgrown it, but we should have."
