Peter Bradshaw

Mrs Caldicot’s Cabbage War

Peter Bradshaw: A desperately depressing, twee British comedy which could have been made in 1978

A desperately depressing, twee British comedy which could have been made in 1978; the insultingly poor script and characterisation are like something from an episode of kids' TV and the whiff of naff rises from it like methane.

Pauline Collins plays a sort of sub-Shirley Valentine role as the widow shunted into a ghastly old people's home by her frightful son and daughter-in-law and leads a grey power revolt.

About 10 minutes in, I all but lost the will to live.
