The BBC has created the new role of chief operating officer for the future media and technology department, promoting Kerstin Mogull, the corporation's deputy director for policy and strategy, to the role.

Mogull takes up the new position immediately and will report to Erik Huggers, the recently appointed BBC FM&T director.

She will be responsible for ensuring the department works effectively with the BBC's News, Vision and Audio & Music divisions, and the BBC Trust, as well as the FM&T's overall management and governance.

Mogull joined the BBC in 2001 having previously worked with Ericsson, American Airlines and United Airlines.

She has worked for BBC Ventures and Factual and Learning and, as controller for the BBC's strategy group, worked on the BBC iPlayer, service licences and the Delivering Creative Future strategy that followed last year's licence fee settlement.

Huggers described Mogull as an executive with "a wealth of experience in organisational and strategic thinking".

He said her appointment would "build strong governance and real coherence across the Future Media and Technology portfolios".

The BBC is also due to announce a second senior management job within FM&T, with responsibility for the division's editorial direction.
