Peter Bradshaw

Virgil Bliss

Peter Bradshaw: The tale of woe is stoutly played, but there is something oppressively familiar in the way this hardest of hard luck stories pans out

Clint Jordan gives an amiable performance as Virgil Bliss, out on parole from New York's Riker's Island prison. Virgil, a virgin and innocent in sexual matters, is introduced to prostitutes by the sleazeball roommate at his grim halfway house, and Virgil instantly falls in love with the first street-girl to give him a $10 blow job. The subsequent tale of woe is stoutly played, but there is something oppressively familiar in the way this hardest of hard luck stories pans out.
