Peter Bradshaw: Combines broad comedy, sentimentality and some semi-serious material about African-American community and culture

This brought back memories of how Eddie Murphy cheered up his 1988 comedy Coming to America with a setpiece in a barbershop, with Murphy playing all the characters, mainly eccentric old geezers with nothing better to do than make provocative conversation. Should Muhammad Ali really be called Cassius Clay? ("His mama call him Clay - I call him Clay!") This is similar, but combines broad comedy, sentimentality and some semi-serious material about African-American community and culture. Calvin (Ice Cube) has inherited a neighbourhood barbershop where everyone loves to hang out, snipping and shaving with the wacky regulars and staff. The comedy is less than razor sharp.
