For a much bleaker, and far less compromised, view of abortion, this Palme d'Or winner is a must. Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) sticks by her friend Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) as she goes through the gruesome intricacies of procuring an illegal termination in 1980s Romania, battered and bruised under Ceausescu. Unlike Juno, there's a sense that it could have actually happened like this; the powerlessness of the two girls in a dreadful situation is made plain with clear-eyed remorselessness.
