Vitalii Sediuk is a comic genius – if you think grabbing famous women is funny

Alexis Petridis: He has lunged at Kim Kardashian, scrapped with Brad Pitt and exposed himself at a fashion show, all in the name of ‘fun’. Truly, he is a master prankster

Lost in Showbiz loves comedy: who doesn’t need a laugh to leaven the burden of everyday life in 2014? But the comedy that Lost in Showbiz loves most of all comes with a hint of danger attached. It’s the comedy that uses laughter as a weapon aimed at the heart of complacency, the comedy of those who fearlessly flout authority, the comedy with a message so dangerous and potent about the sick, sad society we live in that the so-called guardians of the status quo seek to shut it down by any means necessary. It’s the comedy that respects no law but the truth, the comedy of brave men and women prepared to put themselves in very real physical danger so that their message might be heard even while they render us hysterical with laughter. Like Jack Kerouac said: you can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify them or vilify them – about the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.

For that reason, LiS believes one name stands above them all in the pantheon of humour: Aaron Barschak, comedy terrorist, the man who broke into Prince William’s 21st birthday party in 2003 dressed as Osama bin Laden in a frock and shouting: “Osama likes it hot.” Maybe you don’t remember him. Clearly terrified of the hilarious laser-guided satirical missile that is shouting “Osama likes it hot”, the establishment and its lapdogs in the lamestream media set out to blacken his name, endlessly reiterating the message that he “wasn’t funny”, “had no talent”, was “a desperate self-publicist who didn’t have a comedic bone in his body” and indeed didn’t seem to have any kind of point to make, given that he claimed to support the war in Iraq and was apparently “quite rightwing”. Perhaps that’s the price you have got to pay for daring to dance along the cutting edge of satire: The Man will try to knock you down.

For a decade now, LiS has waited for someone brave enough to take up the comedy terrorist’s proud mantle – it had high hopes for that bloke who threw a cream pie at Rupert Murdoch – but, it seemed, to no avail. That was, until this week, when it became aware of a new, blindingly bright star in the firmament of hard-hitting satirical comedy, a joker unafraid to risk arrest and censure so that the world may have a chuckle: Vitalii Sediuk. Sediuk is the 26-year-old Ukrainian “prankster” who attracted media attention last week for lunging at Kim Kardashian and apparently attempting to rugby tackle her as she left a fashion show in Paris, leaving Kardashian shrieking and visibly shaken. I know, I know: nothing quite says “widespread hilarity” like the sight of a traumatised, shrieking woman, does it?

But Sediuk’s unique brand of fun doesn’t simply end there, with the laughter that must accompany a visibly terrified woman crying in the wake of a physical assault. Earlier this year, he attracted media attention for crawling under the actor America Ferrera during the Cannes film festival and attempting to look up her dress. In other incidents, Sediuk lunged at Brad Pitt at the Maleficent premiere, breaking his glasses; exposed himself during a New York fashion show; rushed onstage while Adele was accepting a Grammy award and “murmured” into the microphone, and handed Madonna a bouquet of hydrangeas, “knowing that she did not like hydrangeas”. Brilliant! That certainly showed Madonna up for the kind of person she really is behind the carefully constructed public face: the kind of person who doesn’t like hydrangeas. Well, the truth’s out now thanks to Sediuk’s incisive satirical humour. LiS sincerely doubts her career will ever recover: can you really justify spending money on the albums and live performances of someone you know doesn’t like hydrangeas?

But wait a moment. Wipe those tears of helpless mirth from your eyes and attempt to regain your composure: hard, I know, when you’re in the presence of a one-off comedic master such as Vitalii Sediuk, but try your best to contain yourself. Incredibly, it seems, there are some people out there who seek to condemn him. Who say that “prankster” is the kind of word that the late Kingsley Amis would have described as “a foolproof wanker-detector”. Who reiterate some strangely familiar lines: not funny, no talent, desperate self-publicist who doesn’t have a comedic bone in his body etc, etc. Who say that the two most recent examples of Sediuk’s brand of humour seem to amount to a) a man who gives every impression of being a witless arsehole attacking a woman and b) a man who gives every impression of being a witless arsehole attacking a woman in a manner that has profoundly unpleasant sexual overtones.

LiS can only wonder if these people have heard Sediuk’s brilliant justification of his actions. Presumably not, for Sediuk’s brilliant justification of his actions instantly diffuses all criticism at a stroke. “I do it primarily for entertainment and fun,” he said earlier this year. Entertainment and fun! Again, LiS refers you to the image of Kim Kardashian after coming face to face with Sediuk’s patent brand of entertainment and fun, and asks: is there a greater example of the sheer spoiled ingratitude of the so-called celebrity in the 21st century? A humourist working at the cutting edge of comedy tries to bring a little bit of entertainment and fun into your life and all you can do is shriek and look distraught. Anyone would think you’d been subjected to an unprovoked physical assault that wasn’t entertaining or funny at all. Or perhaps it was a shriek of joy at the realisation that the dangerous and unruly spirit of comedy terrorism is abroad once more, and that it can only be a matter of time until ITV2 offers him a series.
