What If review – skimpy material that’s, like, super-annoying?

Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan do their best to lift this kooky romcom out of the doldrums and fail, writes Xan Brooks

Nathan Rabin, the US film critic who coined the phrase "manic pixie dream girl", recently called for its enforced retirement. The label, he feels, has had its day, the archetype worn thin from overuse. Sadly, his urgent memo arrives too late to stop What If, a caffeinated rom-com in which Zoe Kazan's capricious animator proceeds to run incessant, irksome rings around a glassy-eyed Daniel Radcliffe. He loves her, she might love him and the pair's on-off courtship is laboriously measured out in missed calls and skinny-dips and high rising terminals that twist every statement into a perky little question. While Radcliffe and Kazan do their best with this skimpy material, their back-and-forth banter is, like, super-annoying?
