Let’s Be Cops review – tired rerun of the pseudo-cop routine

Nothing new in this buddy comedy about two losers posing as LA police – it’s been done better before too, says Peter Bradshaw

There are one or two laughs in this semi-stoner buddy comedy about a couple of losers, played by Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr, who get fake LAPD cop uniforms for a fancy-dress party, and enjoy strutting around the streets in these outfits afterwards – getting some respect for once in their lives. Then our dope-smoking Walter Mitty goofballs find themselves out of their depth in some serious criminal business. Co-writer and director Luke Greenfield got the idea from a wacky episode in his own life, but I couldn't help remembering the cult thriller from 1994, I Love a Man in Uniform by Canadian writer-director David Wellington, about a bit-part actor who gets a role as a cop in a TV show, sneaks his costume home, becomes addicted to wearing it around the streets, gets respect, gets out of his depth ... etc etc. That was played deadly straight, with overtones of black-comic satire, and I think there was more narrative mileage in that than in the purely comedy approach. Well, there's nothing new in this business. The dopey duo have a few decent lines, though Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum already showed us how to do the pseudo-cop routine in the Jump Street pictures.
