Kendrick Lamar is set to premiere a short film inspired by his acclaimed breakthrough album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City. Titled M.A.A.D, the 14-minute movie will debut at Sundance’s new Next festival, which begins next week in Los Angeles.

M.A.A.D was directed by Kahlil Joseph, who won accolades for his 2012 collaboration with Flying Lotus, Until the Quiet Comes. It is described as “a kaleidoscope of storylines and ideas that defy typical categorization to explore new languages and new forms”. Like Lamar’s album, the film centres on life in south central Los Angeles. Joseph has used a cast of local actors including Kamar Bailey, Shenelle Bullock and Bijan Faby.

According to Fader, M.A.A.D will have its premiere on 9 August, alongside a Lotus-soundtracked feature called Imperial Dreams. Joseph and Lamar will both attend the screening and participate in a panel discussion.

Lamar is already working on the follow-up to Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, consulting with musicians such as Pharrell Williams for encouragement and advice. In a recent interview with Complex, Lamar said he is trying to set aside thoughts of what came before, focusing instead on the present: “I don’t want to become that person reflecting on what has been done,” he explained. “I’m only as good as my last word, my last hook, my last bridge.”

Released in 2012, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City was selected as the Guardian’s No 5 album of the year.
