Inbetweeners 2 scores biggest opening day ever for a comedy at UK box office

The sequel to the hit film, originally a much-loved TV sitcom, has proved that the four lads actually do have pulling power after all

The Inbetweeners 2 has made £2.75m in its opening day, a record for a live-action comedy at the UK box office.

It's the sequel to The Inbetweeners Movie, which itself was a spinoff from the E4 sitcom following the efforts of four teenage lads in getting drunk, chatting up girls, and trying not to embarrass themselves on a constant basis – and their failure to achieve all three.

The first film, following the foursome to Crete on holiday, was a huge success at the UK box office. It held the previous first-day record, taking £2.61m in its first 24 hours in August 2011. It went on to make over £45m in the UK, outperforming Brit hits like Slumdog Millionaire, Philomena and Four Weddings and a Funeral – in terms of purely British productions, only The King's Speech has grossed more in recent years.

Perhaps chasing some of the £5.5m the first film made in Australia, the Inbetweeners 2 sees Jay spending a gap year down under (cue smutty gags) and the rest going out to visit him.

Answering Guardian readers' questions earlier this week, actor Joe Thomas wouldn't be drawn on whether there would be a third film, but did say: "We do feel quite at home in this show. When we get back together, there's quite a lot of infant regression going on. So maybe we haven't outgrown it, but we should have."
