Rio 2 review – vibrant colours, lovely animation, patchy plot

Star vocal performances and great animation are the making of this pleasingly bird-brained sequel, writes Mark Kermode

More of the same (with a soupcon less sparkle) as our overly domesticated blue feathered friends head off to the Amazon in search of a flock of recently discovered stablemates. Jesse Eisenberg phones it in as fish-out-of-water Blu who stashes a GPS in his fanny pack to the dismay of nature-loving partner Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and her human-hating dad (Andy Garcia). Brazilian director Carlos Saldanha and his team of crack animators paint the vibrant, verdant settings in eye-catching detail, providing ample visual distraction from the patchy plot (saving the rainforest, meeting the parents, putting on a show) which wibbles episodically from one set piece to the next. Top marks go to Jemaine Clement as vengeful luvvie cockatoo Nigel, whose Shakespearean rendition of I Will Survive rivals Peter Sellers's thespian reading of A Hard Day's Night.
