The Avengers director Joss Whedon has rush-released his latest production, In Your Eyes, by making it available for digital download only minutes after its world premiere at the Tribeca film festival.

Whedon, who wrote and produced In Your Eyes, released the film through his company, Bellwether Pictures, on the Vimeo On Demand service. It is available worldwide at a cost of $5 (£3) for a 72-hour rental period. Whedon announced the release strategy in a short video that played after the premiere screening had finished.

Directed by Brin Hill, In Your Eyes is described as "a metaphysical romance" about "the reserved wife of a prominent East Coast doctor" and "a charming ex-con seeking a fresh start in New Mexico". It stars Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David, and early reviews have called it "a pretty moving, offbeat little love story", and "weirdly earnest … [and] firmly entrenched in the realm of unintentional comedy".

Whedon was unable to attend the premiere screening of the film as he is working on The Avengers follow-up Age of Ultron.
