To what extent can technology enhance the day-to-day lives of city dwellers around the world? To better answer this question, we've teamed up with our friends at the New Cities Foundation to launch the 2014 edition of AppMyCity!, a global competition to find the world's best urban mobile application.

AppMyCity! will embrace any new app that improves your urban experience, connects people and makes cities more fun, vibrant and sustainable places. In time, Guardian Cities readers will be asked to try out many of the 2014 entries – but for now, we just want to hear about your personal favourites.

Whether they are specific to your city or have gone global, which new urban apps are the ones you just cannot do without? Tell us at the end of this thread.

Those app developers wanting to enter the competition have until 18 April 2014 to submit their apps at www.appmycity.org. To qualify, their app must have been publicly launched between 1 January 2013 and 1 May 2014. The apps should have a clear urban focus, in one of many categories such as mobility, sustainability, equity, citizenship, retail, art and entertainment, health, water, or other city-related topics.

Guardian Cities will announce the list of 10 semi-finalists on 6 May. The winner, who will receive a prize of $5,000, will be revealed during the New Cities Summit in Dallas, which is taking place from 17-19 June.

On 12 March from 4-5pm, the New Cities Foundation will host a technology-themed tweet chat as part of its monthly New Cities Summit series: #ncs2014
