Mavericks, the latest version of Apple’s OS X operating system for computers, is now available to download from today for free.

Also known as OS X 10.9, Mavericks – named after a surf spot in California – can be downloaded from the Mac App Store by any user with a compatible computer.

Included in the update are the new iBooks and Maps apps, part of Apple's move towards the app-focused model debuted on the iPhone. A redesigned version of the Calendar app and an update for Safari, Apple’s web browser, are also included.

Mavericks also introduces “iCloud Keychain”, a redesigned version of the company’s old Keychain service which syncs across devices. The feature also encourages users to create more secure passwords with a new generator, and allows credit card details to be saved for future use.
