Taylor Swift may soon be cast as Joni Mitchell in a big-screen biopic. The 22-year-old country singer is reportedly "circling the role" of Mitchell in a film adaptation of Sheila Weller's book Girls Like Us.

Published in 2008, Girls Like Us follows the stories of Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon, "charting their lives as women at a magical moment in time" (the late 60s). Although Swift has not signed a deal, she has been linked" to the role for several months, Variety reports.

Still little known in the UK, Swift has sold more than 20m copies of her first three albums. She was the bestselling artist of 2008 and 2010 in the US, and is the youngest person to win a Grammy for album of the year. Swift made her acting debut in a 2009 episode of CSI but she has since appeared in the film Valentine's Day and as the voice of Audrey in 2012's Dr Seuss feature, The Lorax.
