Elfie Hopkins – review

This Welsh-set comedy-horror noir doesn't quite work – but the director might still be one to watch, says Peter Bradshaw

There are some nice moments in this debut feature, a comedy horror-noir, but it doesn't quite hang together. In a Welsh village, lonely Elfie Hopkins, played by Jaime Winstone, passes the time by affecting the mannerisms of a private detective – part Miss Marple, part Jake Gittes – and smoking weed with a mate ,who secretly has feelings for her. Then a very creepy family moves in to the village. It doesn't totally take off until the final act, but there's evidence here that Ryan Andrews will become a force to be reckoned with.
