ITV has relaunched its news website in a fresh bid to compete with the BBC and Sky News online.

The new version of the ITV News website is billed as a "24-hour rolling news hub" and is a significant departure from the previous site.

ITVNews.com's home page has been turned into a live news steam and will feature minute-by-minute updates on major stories from the UK and abroad.

The relaunch is ITV's biggest attempt yet to compete online with rival news outlets such as the BBC, Sky News and newspaper websites. ITVNews.com has struggled to keep up with the dominance of BBC News and rise of newspaper sites from the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian.

Julian March, head of digital media for ITV news and sport, said the new site is inspired by the immediacy of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

He said the new site represents ITV News "in the digital age" and was a significant break from BBC News and Sky News. "We could have launched a 'me too' product but we don't think that that could have made an impact," March added.

"We are conscious of where ITV News is in the [online news] market. We are confident that this product is distinctive and can make an impact."

The site features ITV News-branded video and can display tweets and one-line updates from all correspondents and commentators. Key ITV News journalists, including business editor Laura Kuenssberg and Africa correspondent Rohit Kachroo, have individual author pages for blogposts and other material. Each of the ITV News sections, such as business, politics and regional news, are designed around a rolling news stream.

Adam Crozier, the ITV chief executive, has put the relaunched ITV News site at the centre of his review of the broadcaster's online offering, which includes the video-on-demand site ITV Player.

The relaunch comes ahead of the government's budget day announcements on Wednesday. ITV also plans to relaunch its sport website ahead of the summer Olympics.

Michael Jermey, the ITV director of news and current affairs, said: "Our digital news service will give people a great new way to follow breaking news wherever they are. It will offer fantastic broadcast quality video and will cover not only the top national and international news of the day but will also provide a strong regional service."
