Peter Bradshaw

Deviation – review

The old Danny Dyer thug schtick makes another appearance in this surprisingly atmospheric thriller, writes Peter Bradshaw

Utterly unafraid of typecasting, Danny Dyer here plays Frankie Norton, a violent and psychotic criminal who has just escaped from Broadmoor. (The film incidentally subscribes to the convention that turning on the radio will cause hyper-local news of this event to blare out, as in a Tom and Jerry cartoon.) On the streets of London, he kidnaps a nurse, Amber (Anna Walton), at knifepoint with a plan hatching in his raddled mind to use her for his escape. This thriller by JK Amalou is bizarrely and excruciatingly acted by Dyer a lot of the time, but actually this film isn't as bad as all that – there is some interesting and atmospheric location work as the pair travel through the bleak urban wilderness.
