This highly entertaining, low-budget black comedy is set largely in the comfortable little terrace home of middle-aged Brighton gangster Bill and his loving wife, Maggie, whose 34-year-old son Karl has just been acquitted of an unspecified crime. Someone has grassed on him, and a succession of lowlife suspects visit the house over the next couple of weeks, including a representative of Mr Big from London. Euphemistic smalltalk flows uneasily. Maggie brews tea; Bill sings folk songs to his own guitar accompaniment and complains about the decline of moral standards. Karl contemplates fleeing the happy nest to marry his pregnant girlfriend. Meanwhile several of the visitors go missing, ending up in graves beneath the South Downs. Very dry, very droll: Brighton Rock reworked in the style of The Royle Family.
