Step Up 2 the Streets

Peter Bradshaw: Cheesily sentimental urban street-dance movie

This sequel to Step Up is an urban street-dance movie that follows the same template: the super-cool street dancer having to train in a stuffy old dance academy with the stuffy old ballet-jazz-tap-loving squares. This one has all the same old cheesy sentimentalism, almost unchanged since Alan Parker's Fame, though these dancers are strictly heterosexual. The choreography itself is exhilarating, particularly the videoed "pranks" carried out by dance crews who set up situationist dance stunts in public to freak out the public or their enemies.
