Feast of love

Philip French: This relationship movie does not halt the decline of director Robert Benton.

Feast of Love is about the vagaries of love and the dubious compensations of family life, centring on the inter-related lives of some well-heeled folks in Portland, Oregon, whose amorous problems are commented on in a Shawshank Redemption-style voiceover by middle-aged university professor Morgan Freeman, who's grieving over the recent death of his son. There is a surprising amount of explicit sex, intended no doubt to counter the prevailing romantic tone, and there's a strong cast that includes the reliable Greg Kinnear at the centre, the blue-chinned Fred Ward on the periphery, and the gracious Jane Alexander as Freeman's wife.

Robert Benton directed some very entertaining movies in the Seventies and Eighties, several of them minor classics, but has done little of interest since, and this movie doesn't halt his decline.
