A real curiosity, this - a weird, sentimental but very watchable fantasy drama about the Korean war, in which three soldiers from the Communist north come into contact with two from the pro-US south, all of them separated from their units and finding themselves stranded in a remote village called Dongmakgol, which is also having to look after a US airman whose plane has ditched, and whom no one can understand.

The opposing soldiers' ferocious mutual suspicion is tempered by an increasing suspicion that they are just being silly, and soon they are working together - like British and German soldiers playing football in no-man's-land - to help replenish the village's food store they have managed to destroy with a careless hand grenade. It is a traditional war movie - anti-war, rather - but interestingly exotic and self-aware.
