A straightforward, unshowy little film which found favour at Sundance, Echo Park LA seems largely improvised and presents a slice of life from the mainly Latin area of East LA which is now undergoing gentrification, if the film is to be believed.
The lead characters are a teenager undergoing the ritual called quinceañera, a traditional Mexican rite of passage on the 15th birthday, and the brother she calls "a lying, thieving gay pothead". The minimal plot involves her "virgin pregnancy", his affair with an older guy and the need to find a new place.
It doesn't amount to an awful lot and the acting is pretty variable but there's a real feeling for the location in a small but distinctive film.
