The BBC is to launch Earth Portal - a website home for the corporation's mass of natural history and environment content from TV, radio and online.
The BBC Vision director, Jana Bennett, today unveiled a plan to use the corporation's natural history content as the basis for a new interactive website.
"It's going to be called the Earth Portal, and it will be the place to go on the web for the best natural history, environment and earth sciences content in the world. And also for the best experience in interacting with and influencing this content," Ms Bennett said.
"Imagine hundreds of hours of material, available on broadband, searchable and navigable by using the image of the earth turning in space, enabling users to explore, discuss and interact, to build their own 'zoo' of favourite animals - and share that selection online - to rate content, build up preferences and take part in real events."
Ms Bennett said the Earth Portal was still in development but would be launched in 2007. She also revealed that £35m had been set aside by the BBC for multiplatform and web projects.
