More re-make than hommage ... Undertow Photograph: London Film Festival

Immediately recognisable as the work of David Gordon Green, whose George Washington was such a srange, arresting debut. Two young brothers (Jamie Bell and Devlon Alan) are living in some kind of nightmarish Deep South back-of-beyond as the plot veers wildly into Night of the Hunter territory. It's not so much an homage as a virtual remake, and can't begin to compete with the magical qualities of Charles Laughton's quirky masterpiece. This is a shame as it's loaded with atmosphere due to Tim Orr's cinematograpy and Philip Glass's memorable score.
