An odd little study of a well-meaning but isolated German schoolteacher, who gradually cracks under the strain of unruly schoolkids and hostile neighbours in the boring town of Karlsruhe. It apparently started out as a film school piece, and with the aid of nuanced performances, writer-director Ade rises above a naff and overlit video format to provide a moving, if meandering, tale.
