Only last month we had a British chiller called The Descent about a team of women who go down into a cave to find themselves up close and personal with a range of frightful subterranean beasts. Now we have a team of mostly buff guys - surely underwear models - who go down into a cave to find themselves in a very similar situation. Only this time the ghastly thingies are bigger and more Alien-y.

The explorers have a couple of women on the team, played by Piper Perabo and our own Lena Headey, who deserves classier material than this. In some ways, the narrative revelations behind The Cave are more interesting than The Descent. But it turns out to be inferior because the action sequences are just so outrageously boring, a result of being edited in a frenetic, almost stroboscopic way, with a thousand cuts a minute. The drama is therefore never allowed to speak for itself, and the result is ultimately a dank, dripping, underground snoozefest.
