Documentary-maker Travis Klose has made a lively, but frustratingly superficial and uncritical study of 63-year-old Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki. He is the prolific and hyperactive creator of provocative sexual images, somewhere between Newton and R Crumb. Yet he also shot a stunning series of photographs called Winter Journey, about the death of his wife from cancer in 1990.

Is there a connection between his flash-trash porn chic and this terrible heartbreak? Klose has no substantial interview with Araki; none of his images is examined or deconstructed in any detail, and the whole film is oddly incurious.
