In brief: Alexander premieres in LA

Plus: Jude Law named 'Sexiest Man Alive', Spike Lee and Keanu Reeves form unlikely partnership, and Spanish director Amenábar causes a stir with euthanasia film

The $150m (£80.8m) epic Alexander was finally unveiled at a star-studded premiere in Los Angeles last night. Oliver Stone's film follows the fortunes of the legendary Macedonian warrior who conquered most of the known world before his death at the age of 33. The film's stars - Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer and Rosario Dawson - all paraded on the red carpet before the screening. Alexander opens in the US next Friday and in the UK on January 7.

Jude Law may be smarting from the comparatively poor performance of his last two films - Alfie and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - but at least he can draw comfort from the current issue of People magazine. The publication has hailed him as this year's "Sexiest Man Alive", placing him above such beefcake rivals as Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Orlando Bloom. The reason? "Supernatural good looks, supersize talent - and so nice that he might just kiss you if you have the nerve to ask." But don't bank on it, ladies.

Spike Lee has hired Keanu Reeves to star in his new film - a director-star partnership that rivals Ang Lee and the Hulk for oddity. Variety magazine reports that Reeves plays a disgraced cop in the film, called The Night Watchman. Spike Lee fans will be hoping for a return to form after the critical disaster of his artificial-insemination comedy She Hate Me.

Director Alejandro Amenábar has stirred up a debate on euthanasia in Spain with his new film. The Sea Inside tells the true story of the poet Ramón Sampedro (played by Javier Bardem in the film), who spent years fighting for the right to die. It is the highest-grossing film of the year in Spain, according to Screen International, seen by more than two million people including the country's new socialist prime minister, Jose Luis Zapatero. Amenábar's previous film was Hollywood spook story The Others, starring Nicole Kidman.
