For the third week running a tale of a bumbling British agent who hates the French clung to the top of the UK box office. Not that the appeal of Johnny English is entirely confined to Middle England. Significantly, the film is also number one in both Germany and Spain.

In its third weekend, the espionage comedy racked up an impressive £2,279,100 from British cinemas, nudging its total domestic tally to £13.7m. These figures kept it way ahead of its nearest competitors. Buoyed by the Easter holiday, the family film Jungle Book 2 vaulted from fourth place to second, with a haul of £1,114,746. The romantic-comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days held at number three in its second week of release, while last week's number two - Phone Booth - dropped two spots.

Johnny English's success helped make also-rans of last week's new releases. Panned by the critics, the garbled Stephen King adaptation Dreamcatcher debuted at number five with £729,525, while the likeable heist comedy Welcome to Collinwood was a new entry at six. The week's only other new arrival in the top ten was Spike Lee's New York redemption play, 25th Hour. Starring Ed Norton as a drug dealer on the eve of a prison term, the film squeaked in at number nine.
