An Academy award nominee for best foreign film, this is a likeable odd-couple comedy from Norway, whose director Petter Naess shows a pleasingly light touch. Per Christian Ellefsen and Sven Nordin play Elling and his friend Kjell Bjarne who share a room at a psychiatric treatment centre and are then discharged into a flat in central Oslo under the eye of the social services. Elling lived for 40 years with his mother, and has clearly absorbed her hectoring, sharp-witted mannerisms. He becomes a shrewish wife/ mother figure to Kjell, a great lumbering oaf with a big heart. It's a charming and funny tale.
