They are traditionally known for their dapper suits and home counties accents, but according to Vanity Fair magazine Britain's top male actors have shown they can mix it with the best of Hollywood's leading men.

Jude Law, Hugh Grant and Ewan McGregor have been named as members of the Tinseltown A-list, and included on the cover of the magazine's ninth Hollywood special issue. The three Brits have studiously dressed down in the group portrait by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, as they line up alongside Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Jack Nicholson.

Although their earnings per film are well short of the enormous sums pulled in by another of the group, Harrison Ford, the invitation to take part is taken as confirmation that they have made it in the US film market. Or as Vanity Fair puts it, that they are "Kings of Hollywood".

Law has built his reputation by working with Steven Spielberg on AI: Artificial Intelligence and Sam Mendes on Road to Perdition. McGregor's breakthrough in Trainspotting was followed by the Star Wars series.

Hugh Grant, perhaps a surprise inclusion, has come to the attention of US viewers partly because films like Notting Hill and Two Weeks Notice have used American female co-stars. Between them, the 13 actors account for 400 film credits and 28 Oscar nominations and awards. Ford who is said to bring in around £22m a picture, remains Hollywood's highest earner, followed by Tom Cruise, who can expect only slightly less.
