Ghost Ship

Peter Bradshaw: It all looks good with great sets and design, ... but it's the same old tired stuff we've seen a hundred times before in various permutations

Gabriel Byrne and Julianna Margulies star in this gruesomely violent tale about a salvage crew who board a mysteriously deserted ship and try to carry off its cargo of gold - to the displeasure of the demonic ghosts aboard. Steve Beck directs and, like his last film, Thirteen Ghosts, it all looks good with great sets and design. And that opening sequence is effectively horrible. From there on in, though, it's the same old tired stuff we've seen a hundred times before in various permutations. A pity, because the setting is perfectly promising - but this is the usual dumbed-down stuff, heading for the video bin.
