Blunkett backs down in privacy row

It's just been announced that UK Home Secretary David Blunkett is backing down from his controversial plans to hand snooping powers to a wide range of government agencies, as reported in the Guardian, over the last eight days, and blogged here. Officially, the plans will not be debated until the next term of parliament - that's in the autumn - but the suggestion appears to be that they have been shelved for the forseeable future.
