The Hollywood actor Meg Ryan has obtained a restraining order against a man claiming to be her husband who broke into a house he thought was hers and waited for her to return.
A court in Santa Monica, California, ordered John Michael Hughes, from Navarre in Florida, to stay at least 150 yards from Ms Ryan for three years, extending a temporary order already in place.
Hughes previously served six months in prison for trying to drive on to George Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, in December 2000 while carrying a rifle, two shotguns and a pistol. He claimed that he wanted to deliver a letter to Mr Bush, who was president-elect at the time.
Hughes, 30, was arrested in early January at a house in Malibu belonging to a couple named Andrea and Tomas Ryan. In his car, parked near by, police found night-vision equipment and a magazine with Ms Ryan on the cover, as well as wine, whisky, and $2,700 (£1,900) wrapped in a pair of underpants.
He said he was married to the actor, and entered by breaking a window because she had forgotten to leave a key under the doormat.
The homeowners are unrelated to the actor, the star of films such as Sleepless in Seattle. Ms Ryan, 40, divorced two years ago from the actor Dennis Quaid.
A court-appointed psychiatrist acting on the defendant's behalf said Hughes was "basically crazy". Dr David Glaser said: "I believe that Mr Hughes is a danger to Meg Ryan's safety."
Ms Ryan, 40, did not attend the hearing, but said in a statement she had become "fearful for my and my family's safety should Mr Hughes ever locate or come near me."
