BT has been condemned for misleading consumers over its Anytime internet package.

It is the sixth time this year the telecoms giant has been forced to withdraw or change its ads.

The advertising standards authority has upheld a series of complaints about a magazine and internet campaign that promised consumers could "surf the net whenever you want for just £14.99 month".

Users complained that the claims were misleading because the offer was subject to restrictions and heavy users were penalised.

BT argued the bandwidth available was not unlimited and it had to introduce a restriction to ensure customers had a high-quality service.

It added customers who stayed on the internet for long periods of time were likely to be experienced users, who would know the difference between BT's offerings.

But the ASA ruled consumers could infer from the claims "no more clock-watching" and "you don't have to worry about the time you go online any more" that they could access the internet for any length of time.

BT has now amended the ads to make clear the package carries limitations.

Earlier this year, BT was told it could not describe its internet service as "fast and reliable" after the ASA ruled it was anything but.
