Destiny Ekaragha’s ultra-low-budget first feature is an ambitious and engagingly authentic adaptation of Bola Agbaje’s Olivier award-winning play. Likable Peckham wannabe Yemi (Malachi Kirby) thinks he has the clothes, the moves and the attitude necessary to impress gobby local diva Armani (Shanika Warren Markland), but the arrival of his sandals-and-socks-wearing Nigerian brother Ikudayisi (OC Ukeje) throws a crosscultural spanner in the works. Over the course of one heady day, tensions erupt in sparky verbal fashion between players who variously (mis)identify as African, West Indian, Jamaican or simply British (“What about the Somalians?” asks one typically bamboozled wisecracker). It’s feisty stuff, a little broad in its homespun comedy perhaps, but frequently funny and insightful, building upon the early promise of Ekaragha’s 2008 short film Tight Jeans, which went down a storm at the London film festival.
