A man dressed as a pirate has been arrested by Australian police after allegedly threatening a security guard with a flick knife on the set of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The 22-year-old, who has not been named, was caught following a police manhunt, according to 9 News. He has been charged with one count of going armed as to cause fear and appeared at a court on the Gold Coast. According to the news network, he was still dressed as a pirate and even had a live parrot on one shoulder.

A woman claiming to be the man’s girlfriend, named only as Jess, 24, told 9 News the pair had arrived on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales after being told they might find work there. “A mate of mine told us to come down and check it out, to get extra work as pirates because he does actually look like a pirate, it’s quite awesome,” she said. The pair, who met on dating website Tinder, had arrived on the Gold Coast as backpackers with the aim of hitchhiking to Byron Bay.

Jess described her boyfriend as a “peace-loving hippie” and animal activist. The parrot was a rescued lorikeet that they had named Essa.

Police say the man became violent at the filming site and threatened a security guard. Afterwards, he was caught on CCTV at a K-Mart store in the Helensvale Westfield shopping complex.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is filming on location in Queensland – on the Gold Coast, in Port Douglas near the Great Barrier Reef, and in the Daintree rainforest in the far north of the state. It will be the fifth movie in the franchise, which has taken $3.7bn worldwide.

In unrelated news, star Johnny Depp has reportedly been forced to fly home to the US after injuring himself on set. The American actor plays scurvy seadog miscreant Captain Jack Sparrow in the long-running Disney saga.
