There have been rave reviews today for Mike Leigh’s latest film, Mr Turner, starring Timothy Spall - and its release comes at the same time as a major exhibition of Turner’s late work at the Tate. The influence of Turner’s painting, a precursor to impressionism, is undeniable, but do you consider him to be the greatest British artist of all time? And if not, who would you nominate? Would you opt for a classic painter such as Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds or John Constable? Or are you more inspired by the contemporary art of some of those who have won or been nominated for the prize set up in Turner’s name: Chris Ofili, Steve McQueen, Douglas Gordon, Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing or Grayson Perry? Or perhaps you prefer something less conceptual, and more crowd-pleasing. (Jack Vettriano, anyone?)
