A chopper flies in over Santa Maria beach, Grand Theft Auto's version of Santa Monica. In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, art director Aaron Garbut explained the extraordinary lengths his team had gone to in order to capture the correct shades of Californian sunshine, tweaking the cameras and colouring for four years Photograph: Rockstar Games

The range of aircraft available to test fly in the game is impressive, from jets to helicopters to this biplane. Here, we're flying in over vineyards, part of the game's vast rural environment, which also takes in woodlands, deserts and mountains. The scene harks back to the very first GTA V trailer, which showed workers picking grapes as a crop duster flew over. We wouldn't be surprised if you could cultivate these vines yourself and become a wine magnate... Photograph: Rockstar Games

Here's one of the lead characters, Franklin, driving a Banshee sports car through downtown. With hundreds of different cars to jack and drive, Los Santos is a petrolhead's playground, and Rockstar claims this is the most authentic and intricately detailed world it has ever created. As you're cruising, many of the shops and clubs can be visited – there are even shopping malls where characters can be kitted out with new clothing and items Photograph: Rockstar Games

Lead characters Michael, Franklin and Trevor all have their own social lives, personal missions and nefarious pastimes. Players are able to switch between the trio at any time, dropping into messy situations like shoot-outs and family disagreements. Each character has their own special ability to bring to missions; while Michael has a bullet time shooting mechanic, Franklin can slow time while driving and Trevor can go into a sort of frenzy mode, dealing out increased damage while taking little of his own Photograph: Rockstar Games

It's not just the land that's been mapped in GTA V – the game also includes a substantial area of ocean, where players can sail and scuba dive, occasionally discovering potentially lucrative wrecks. You can also go parasailing or whiz along the shore on a jet ski. In the background of this picturesque scene we can just see Vespucci beach, GTA's version of Venice Beach, which is right down in the south-west of the map Photograph: Rockstar Games

Los Santos wouldn't be an accurate approximation of Los Angeles without the snaking storm drains made famous by films such as Grease and Terminator 2 – just the place to hide getaway vehicles for one of the game's many heists. Car chases are going to be huge and epic – Rockstar hasn't just taken the landscape of Los Angeles, the design team has been influenced by its dominant movie industry. The game then, is a pastiche of the Hollywood dream, filled with failed actors and broken dreams. But trailers so far also hint at stunt-filled chases that capture the feel of the great Michael Bay, Tony Scott and Don Simpson action flicks Photograph: Rockstar Games

This is the downtown area of Los Santos, with the Vinewood sign visible in the background. Every inch of the environment can be explored from the opening of the game – nothing is closed off. The styling of the city is based on tens of thousands of photographs and video recordings taken by the art teams in month-long expeditions to LA. And every light source shown here is real – you can following the twinkling dots to every street lamp, office window and car headlamp. Photograph: Rockstar Games
