The Falling, a haunting film about a mysterious outbreak of mass hysterical fainting at a girls’ school in the 1960s, was given a giddy five stars by chief Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw in 2014. He also described its score, courtesy of Tracey Thorn, as having “a seductive prog-rock sensibility, with something of Nick Drake” – a soundtrack that gets its official vinyl release as part of 2015’s Record Store Day on 18 April.
Entitled Songs from The Falling, the EP is made up of eight songs and sketches by Thorn, written after consultation with the film’s director Carol Morley and inspired in particular by a scene in which the girls jam in the music room. “Carol sent me a cardboard box full of the instruments [the film’s characters] used – the typical things you’d expect, wood-block, tambourine, triangle, recorder – and I decided to use the scene as a springboard for my songs,” says Thorn.
With partner and fellow Everything But the Girl member Ben Watt engineering the recordings, Thorn wrote and performed the score entirely, allowing herself only one take on each of the instruments. “I wanted to leave in all timing discrepancies to try and capture the loose freeform feel of an untutored school performance,” she adds.
