This likably scathing rom-com from writer/director/star Desiree Akhavan (best known for the web series The Slope) has something of the sardonic bite of Gillian Robespierre’s Obvious Child with episodic flashback overtones of Annie Hall. Akhavan is Shirin, perennially rebounding from her collapsing relationships, while perpetually unable to tell her Iranian family that she is “a little bit gay”.
Having hooked up with Rebecca Henderson’s sternly bespectacled Maxine on New Year’s Eve, Shirin pinballs through an anarchic arcadia of romantic, social and sexual encounters/crises, her razor-sharp tongue set to kill throughout. Despite its navel-gazing tendencies, this retains a spicily frank comedic edge, laced with the kind of bitingly quotable epithets you’ll wish you’d thought of yourself.
