A five-bedroom home that featured in the Oscar-nominated civil rights drama Selma has gone on sale in Atlanta for $499,000.

The property, which was built in 1930 in the American Craftsman style, doubled for the Selma, Alabama home of Sullivan and Richie Jean Jackson in Ava DuVernay’s Martin Luther King biopic.

The house features vintage staging put in place for the film shoot and a number of period details, including a claw-foot bathtub and two pedestal sinks in the master bathroom, ray ceilings, fireplaces, french doors and a wooden staircase. It also features three bathrooms and an office with a separate entrance, as well as a backyard.

The Jacksons were friends of King and civil rights activists. Their real home, which is now likely to become a museum, is where King planned the famous Selma-to-Montgomery marches that form the centrepiece of Selma. The couple were played by Niecy Nash and Kent Faulcon in DuVernay’s film.

Selma was controversially nominated for just two Oscars, winning the prize for best song but losing out to Birdman for best film. DuVernay’s film is nevertheless one of the best-reviewed movies of 2014, with a 98% “fresh” score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and has taken $49m at the box office.
