The zombie romantic comedy, or romzomcom, was a genre sensationally popularised, if not invented, 10 years ago by Edgar Wright with Shaun of the Dead. This one doesn’t really compare, and it’s also not up to the standard of Warm Bodies, last year’s undead romp with Nicholas Hoult. We get some goodish moments, along with reasonable emo necrophilia stuff and an all-too-brief cameo from Anna Kendrick, but it’s lacking in genuine comedy or fear. Getting people in creepy makeup to gurn and shuffle and get shot isn’t automatically scary plus hilarious.
Dane DeHaan is Zach, a sensitive guy mourning the tragic loss of his girlfriend, Beth (Aubrey Plaza). After the funeral, her parents reveal that Beth has returned home, and doesn’t understand what has happened or what she now is. Zach and Beth’s creepy reunion is entertaining enough, but once we’re back in standard zombie-outbreak territory of knockabout farce, with lots of extras stumbling around, things just get a bit lazy and cliched.
