UK mobile operator Orange has just launched an new service where users can order books, CDs, DVDs, tickets and the like by sending a text message on their mobile phone. Although it's not a real innovation, I particularly like the TexTicket function which means you should be able to turn up at an event and gain entry just by showing the doorman the text message e-ticket on your mobile. But there are things missing, perhaps for security reasons, perhaps because they haven't worked it out yet. There's not the degree of smartness you'd hope for in the new service: billing has to be done via credit or debt card, rather than mobile bill, and involves a phone call for the first order, and pin-numbers for subsequent orders. And nobody has really explained to me why you'd want to order a DVD, for delivery in "two to four days", while out and about.
