Gay website Queercompany.com is to auction off the huge "Lesbian Kiss" ad hoarding that created such a storm last month.

Queercompany said it would frame the image from the ad hoarding at Centrepoint in the West End, sell it off to the highest bidder and split the proceeds between gay campaigning group Stonewall and "queer arts projects".

The number of potential bidders will be limited however by its size - 90x10m.

Today the company splashed a "For Sale" strip across the billboard, which shows two women kissing on a bed and the strapline "Thank God for Women".

"This is a unique opportunity to acquire a one-of-a-kind memento of the breaking of a major barrier in the depiction of lesbian and gay lives in our society," said Dominic Richards, CEO of Queercompany.

The ad campaign, created by agency Anti Corp, is running on 11 billboards at major junctions in London.

Other executions showed two semi-naked men embracing with the strapline, "Thank God for Men".

Despite 50 complaints from members of the public - who complained it promoted homosexuality to children - and outrage from some tabloid newspapers, the Advertising Standards Authority cleared the campaign on January 12.

The ASA ruled that it was not sexually explicit and was unlikely to affect children.

"We have been amazed by the response to our poster and we're delighted that in the space of a month it has become a cultural icon, appearing in newspapers and magazines around the world," added Mr Richards.

He said Queercompany has been inundated with emails praising the ads and the uncompromising stance that they take.

The site has also received pleas for posters and T-shirts bearing the images.
