The Crazy Frog ringtone was annoying enough but the nation's trains, pubs and other public spaces will soon echo to the sound of Vicky Pollard moaning: "Yeah but no but", Daffyd asserting: "I'm the only gay in the village" and Andy stating: "I want that one", as BBC Worldwide launches its first mobile content service.
The corporation's commercial arm will today announce plans for a service offering video clips, screen wallpapers and ringtones from a host of BBC shows. Alongside ringtones of catchphrases from Little Britain characters Daffyd, the surly Ms Pollard and phoney paraplegic Andy, the service will allow users to download a two-minute clip of David Brent inflicting his cringeworthy dancing technique on staff in The Office as well as vintage clips of Doctor Who.
The service will be launched on the Orange network with clips and ringtones charged at under £1, but BBC Worldwide is currently in talks with other mobile phone companies about making BBC shows available to their customers.
The service, to be launched today, will initially offer wallpapers, ringtones and video clips from The Office, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, The League of Gentlemen, Goodness Gracious Me, Doctor Who and Little Britain. BBC Worldwide is hoping to include other shows as the year progresses.
BBC Worldwide's director of business development, Jason Blain, said the deal had taken a considerable amount of time and effort as the company had to navigate the complex web of rights that govern shows such as Little Britain. He said he hoped legitimate BBC content on mobiles would put an end to the unauthorised content currently available.
"It is important for the BBC, for our talent and our content ... for us to develop a legitimate model," he said. "The relationship with Orange is the founding partnership for our UK mobile content business."
