Where’s the beef?

Ros Taylor signposts some of the UK's best food and drink sites.

Where are the sites dedicated to the joys of the British pudding? Where is the explanation of where to taste Caerphilly, Lancashire and real Cheddar? Not yet. Fans of British food will have to be content with sites devoted to beer, balti, chocolate, whisky and English wine. Can we have some more?

birmingham.gov.uk/balti

A comprehensive guide to the delights of Birmingham's Balti Run, including restaurant and takeaway reviews.

farmshopping.com

Hopelessly out of date (plums are in season at the moment, it seems), this site's chief merit lies in its directory of farm shops, which are listed by county: click on the map at the bottom of the page. Worth a look if you want to pick your own pumpkins and blueberries, but call the farm first; telephone numbers are supplied.

aboutfood.co.uk/places/

Culinary guides to a number of British towns and counties, including Kent, Cardiff, Harrogate, Tayside and (yes) Reading.

englishwineproducers.com

Last year's harvest was "very approachable", according to the English Wine Producers' Association, which also provides a guide to all the vineyards open to the public for tours and tastings. Some survive as far north as Leeds. For doubters, there's the London wine emporium, Vinopolis (vinopolis.co.uk).

dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jhb/whisky/

Claims to be the oldest non-commercial whisky site on the web. For devotees only.

maltwhiskytrail.com

Where to stay and drink in Speyside. For an online tour of the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre in Edinburgh, which features a tour by a holographic ghost, visit whisky-heritage.co.uk.

britishcheese.com/Trade/pubscheme.htm

Lists 23 pubs where the range and quality of cheese - as part of a ploughman's lunch or a cheeseboard - have been recognised by the British Cheese Board.

cadburyworld.co.uk

Highly favoured by school parties, the chocolate emporium is apparently so popular that visitors who turn up without a booking are sometimes sent away.

thetaste.co.uk/thetasteof.html

Recommends breweries and beer in Gwent, Cornwall, Norfolk, Kent and Manchester. Enthusiasts may also want to visit the Bass Museum in Burton-on-Trent (bass-museum.com).

uk.cambridge.org/history/features/food_history/links/schools.htm

Links to the major British cookery schools, including Prue Leith's, Raymond Blanc's, Nick Nairn's, Ballymaloe and Fungi To Be With (mushroom-picking classes).

ediblelondon.co.uk

Edible London not only tells you what's in season this month, but recommends the best pubs, bars, afternoon teas, pie and mash shops, chippies, food halls and food events in and around the capital.

whatsonwhen.com/pages/foodanddrink.jml

Where else would events like the Dock Pudding Championship come to the world's attention? On Tuesday, up to 20 people will be competing to make the best pudding from dock leaves mixed with onion and oatmeal. Portions are only 20p.
